How to Apply for WHIP

If a landowner or operator decides to apply for WHIP, a Conservation Program Application (NRCS-CPA-1200) needs to be completed.  The NRCS-CPA-1200 may be obtained from your local USDA Service Center or by clicking on the above form.

Evaluation Process

Applications interested in developing woody habitat will only be evaluated and considered for FY2007 funding if the land is physically located within the following South Dakota Association of Conservation Districts (SDACD) Watersheds

  •    Northwest and Hills SDACD Watershed Area
  •    South James/Missouri SDACD Watershed Area
  •    Vermillion/Big Sioux SDACD Watershed Area

Please reference the map below for SDACD Area Watershed locations.

All applications to develop wetland, riparian, and/or grassland habitat will be evaluated and considered for FY2007 funding regardless of location; however, if the application is developing multiple habitats, the primary habitat will be used to determine if the application will be considered for FY2007 funding.  The primary habitat will be determined by extent and cost-share amount.

Thresholds are established for the ranking process.  Applications at or above the established thresholds are considered a high priority and will be considered for funding.  The thresholds are as follows:

  • Wetland Habitat - 75
  • Riparian Habitat - 60
  • Grassland Habitat - 65
  • Woody Habitat - 75
