Soil and Water Stewardship Week

April 28-May 5, 2013 is Soil and Water Stewardship Week. Did you know American agriculture not only provides you food and clothing, but also helps meet needs around the world? Plus, American agriculture is not just producing more food; it’s producing higher quality in an environmentally sustainable way.

Last year in South Dakota, more than 4,700 conservation plans were voluntarily applied on farms and ranches across the state.  That means over 1.7 million acres of agricultural land was made more healthy and productive. Take a moment to say “good job” to a farmer or rancher during Soil and Water Stewardship Week April 28-May 5, 2013.

2013 Proclamation

South Dakota farmers are on a Health Kick!  Soil Health is soil managed to its maximum potential through a system of conservation practices, including never-till, cover crops, advanced nutrient and pest management, and buffers and drainage systems where appropriate.  This approach results in healthy soil that reduces erosion, requires less nutrient inputs, manages the effects of flood and drought, and reduces nutrient and sediment loading to streams and rivers.

Natural Resources Drought Assistance for Farmers/Ranchers

Jeffrey Zimprich, State Conservationist, of USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, Huron, says field offices around the state are ready to provide information and assistance to farmers hit hard by the drought.  NRCS administers a number of Farm Bill programs that provide technical and financial assistance to farmers and ranchers to install conservation practices.

Zimprich said, “The prolonged and extreme heat temperatures coupled with lack of rain is creating situations in some areas of South Dakota where some producers may be forced to make critical changes to their operation.”  The South Dakota Governor’s Drought Task Force web site is an excellent resource:  http://drought.sd.gov/.  NRCS is also encouraging producers seeking advice to contact their district conservationist at the local field office.
